Marvel Television, which had made shows like “Loki” just aired its new series “Wonder Man” earlier this year. The first season is viewable on Disney+ and it was an interesting show to watch.
There is a Marvel Comic hero Wonder Man but he’s not in any of the movies or has his own movie in real life so the show is basing of that hero getting a remake based on the fake movie they played in the show while they showed Simon as a kid.
The show follows the process from the first audition to the call back to landing the role. Simon meets another actor, Trevor, who is the anti hero of the show is assigned to prove that Simon is a threat because of his powers, so he doesn’t go to jail to finish is sentence. In the world of the story, people with powers are banned from getting jobs which is shown in the episode “DoorMan” as a black and white episode that explains the why behind it and also why Simon is worried about his secret getting out by showing his face at the end of that episode.
One thing that made the show not so enjoyable was that the screen didn’t fit the entire screen. I had to zoom in to see it better and there was still a black border around.
I would have liked to see more of Simon using his powers and fight more villains as an undercover hero. hat would also fit the Marvel brand better and make the story more interesting. Overall, the story isn’t bad, but I think showing Simon as a kid watching Wonder Man on the big screen then when he’s older being able to play him in the remake was a nice touch.
The main sets of the show are on movie and show sets. It is really cool that an actor is playing a person that wants to be an actor. The set designs are a really nice touch, I liked seeing the equipment and everything that would make a set a set.
I also thought the friendship between Simon and Trevor felt real as the show progressed from Trevor being his friend as a job to actually being his friend. The feeling Trevor felt was real and genuine, which led to a big thing in the plot in the seventh and eighth episode.
The first time Simon uses his powers was in the first episode after his girlfriend broke up with him. It was so amazing and exciting in all the different ways. Which were fun to watch because of the acting, special effects, camera work and more.
One of the things that felt relatable was in the first episode where Simon was making all these changes to a scene where he is just an actor in, and I felt the same type of anger and ticked off as the director of the show that he was acting in. These actions of Simon do lead him to get fired from his show and get called out on it. One of the things Simon has to learn is how to go with the flow and to not overthink each little piece of writing in the script. But I can feel how overthinking can lead to a spiral that can feel hard to get out of and it can be hard to not overthink.
Overall the show isn’t bad and I can’t wait to see if Marvel green lights it to get a second season and continue the series. I rate Wonder Man a 7/10
