Disney+ released a new original Christmas musical movie featuring the Jonas Brothers. The movie follows the Jonas Brothers trying to get home for the holidays after their concert in London. The brothers try to get home in a lot of different ways, but they are “Only Human.” Joe goes out after the concert by himself and bumps into Santa Claus in a bar out of all places, and tells him how he feels like the connection between him and his brothers hasn’t really been there.
I like the new twist on Santa in this movie, such as when he puts a curse on them that prevents them from “Coming Home for Christmas.” I guess it’s just “What a man gotta do” to fix a brotherly bond. That’s when things go downhill fast. On the day before they leave, the first thing the curse does is blow up the plane, and in all, the whole sequence was amazing to watch. As the plane flew around, Santa Claus’s voice played in the background, creating a spectacular sound. The subplot of the curse itself was very entertaining.
After they realize they can’t get home, their plan gets pushed “Backwards”. The brothers make it, with the help of a travel agent, Cassidy, by taking a train to what they think is Paris, but really is to Amsterdam. There, Joe meets a girl, Lucy, whom he hadn’t seen since they were kids. On the train, the two reminisced by recalling, “ ‘Remember When’ we were kids,” and what was happening in their lives up until this point.
Once the trio is in Amsterdam, Kevin sees that Ethan, who’s a famous comedian, is also in Amsterdam and owns a privet jet. However, Ethan hates Nick after they starred in “Home Alone” the musical. After that disaster of Nick and Ethan performing together, the movie cuts to Joe and Lucy hanging out. This scene was cute, I like how Joe expressed feelings for her subtly.
One thing that was kinda “Cool” to see was how much Joe and Lucy met up. It was as if wherever he was, she was; it’s obvious that Lucy and Joe like each other. While Joe was hanging out, Nick got him and his brothers plane tickets, but “Like always”, something happens. Joe had all three of their passports in his pouch, but the curse made them disappear. I thought this scene portrayed their distress perfectly; it was on point and left them to try a new tactic because you can’t travel out of the country without a passport.
Between Cassidy’s crazy pilot-ex-boyfriend, disagreements and a blown-up plane, everything causes breakups among the brothers. This leads them to split up, but not for long, because the band ends up back together. I thought the wolves were a good representation of their bond because wolves come in packs. With that, it was good to see all three of them realize that they need each other, which ends up lifting the curse. The breaking of the spell was just as awesome as when it was set- Nick, Kevin and Joe make it home to their families for Christmas and have a big party all together. Nick and Kevin invited Lucy to come over, and she and Joe hit it off really well.
This movie was such a good new Christmas movie. There were a few things that I feel like didn’t make complete sense, but overall, it was a great movie. I enjoyed how it ended on Christmas Day, instead of starting there. One thing that I didn’t understand about the movie was why actor Will Ferrell needed to be in the movie. He makes an appearance at the start and end of the movie, but doesn’t hold a significant role, such as a narrator, which didn’t make sense. But I did appreciate watching him at the beginning, with how his fans want to do movies like Anchorman 3 and Elf 2, which the whole scene didn’t make total sense, but I did think it was funny. The movie’s vibe made it feel “Like it’s Christmas.” Overall, I rate this movie an 8.5/10.
