Eternity Martinez

Eternity Martinez, Staff Writer

Eternity is a sophomore, and this is her second year on the Gazette staff.

The sun is setting, the sky is dimming and Granite Bay sophomore Eternity Martinez is capturing the perfect photo of her little brother fishing-of his dark silhouette against the darkening sky.

“I kind of just knew,” Martinez said of her feelings when she took the photo.

Martinez has only recently gotten into photography, in part from journalism. She was inspired by the “amazing” photos she saw on others ' stories, noting one particular photo of a turtle. From there, she slowly picked up photography; she started taking photos for her articles and even travelled with a camera on trips.

Martinez credits journalism for much of her interest in photography, but she also gives partial credit to her friends who played an early but important role in her writing career; after they gave her encouragement on a unicorn story in the second grade.

And while journalism came first, Martinez finds it is her interest in journalism that has strengthened her photography and not the other way around.

She also stressed there was this certain 'je ne sais quoi' that she naturally brought to both her journalism and photography endeavors.

“I just passionately write, I write and I write and I write,” she said. “I don’t really have to stop and think about it, I just know what I’m going to write about.”

Martinez is also a huge nature lover,  even deeming herself to be “very adventurous” and an “outside” person who loves to travel.

“I like to take photos of people and a lot of wildlife,” she said, noting her brother, squirrels, birds and flowers are all frequent photo subjects.

Photos are beautiful memories for Martinez. “If I’m just walking down the street and I see a pretty [flower] I’ll just snap a picture [of it],” she said.

“Because I feel like it’s rude to pick other people’s flowers,” she added with a small laugh.

Martinez also loves to travel, citing L.A. for its wide variety of shops and restaurants to try and Hawaii for its beautiful beaches as two future destinations.

“We went to this one place in Oregon,” she recalled, smiling, “and my sister’s like ‘can you stop walking please, please like you’re walking so much’, and I’m just walking because I just love looking around and finding new things.”

Martinez brings this curiosity and eagerness to experiment to all aspects of her life-from photography to writing to even things like entertainment choices (of which she enjoys all genres from horror movies to Grey’s Anatomy) to even her fashion choices. And she’s sure to bring these attributes to her work with the paper so be on the lookout for exciting and experimental stories to come!
