Antonio is a sophomore, and this is his second year on the Gazette staff.

Sophomore Antonio “Tony” Sperandeo lives and breathes basketball.

He’s a shooting guard for Granite Bay High School. He’s pursuing college basketball. He wants a job in the basketball world. Even his favorite video game is NBA 2K.

But it wasn’t always like this.

Before he was committed to the court, Sperandeo was a runner for the GBHS cross country and track and field teams.

“I’ve liked doing it all my life,” Sperandeo said. “That’s what I’m best at because my mom and dad were great at it.”

Sperandeo mainly runs shorter events, just like his father.

As a freshman, Sperandeo ran two miles in 11:12, breaking his personal record and bringing GBHS a first place finish at the SFL championships.

Now that his interest lies with basketball, Sperandeo has gone all out. The perfect example of this is his Instagram.

In his bio, Sperandeo writes that he is “the biggest Emmanuel Mudiay fan in the world.” Mudiay is a professional basketball player for the Portland Trail Blazers.

“I saw him (Mudiay) as a rookie and I just really enjoyed him and then I met him. He became my favorite player,” Sperandeo said.

Sperandeo’s involvement in both track and basketball at GBHS helps him cover sports-oriented stories for the Granite Bay Gazette.

“I got into journalism because I saw stories online about subjects I liked like sports and it was very interesting to me,” Sperandeo said.

Outside of school Sperandeo enjoys hanging out with his friends, playing video games and spending time with his two dogs, TK and Loki.

This year Sperandeo plans to put running on the backburner and focus on getting on the varsity basketball team.

“I just decided I really wanted to go out for basketball,” Sperandeo said. “I’ve been practicing a lot over the summer now and hopefully I can do it through high school.”
