It’s weird, it’s new, but isn’t that wonderful? Recently on July 28, we got a brand new series continuing the Cartoon Network animated seriesThe Amazing World of Gumball on Hulu. Called The Wonderful Weird World of Gumball (TWWWOG) While the series is virtually the same on a visual level as the 2011-2019 version, it failed to give off the same feeling as the original show for the story in the episodes.
Some differences between the original and the new series is that the first one had two stories per episode. Each episode would be about 24 minutes long with 12 minutes going towards both stories, but now there is only one long storyline per episode, like seasons 4-6 of the first series. The Wonderful Weird World of Gumball also gained new voice actors for Gumball and Darwin. Their voices in the TWWWOG sound pretty much the same as they did before.
The plots of the shows are different as well, and not really in a good way, as there are some episodes in the new series that are trying to get a message across about the real world. This wasn’t really the case in the Amazing World of Gumball from 2011-19. The most popular episode from the series is season 5 episode 5 “The Choices.” according to IMDb. In this episode, Nicole, (Gumball’s mom) is thinking about how her life got to where it is and thinks back to where she met Richard and what would have happened if she had done something different that day. Also according to IMDb the most popular The Wonderful Weird World of Gumball episode is season 1 episode 18 “The Portrait” where Nicole is trying to get a nice family portrait when more family shows up, and even the police. The episode “The choices” doesn’t really have a real world message as the “The Portrait.” I feel like does with all the stuff with the police.
It was fun seeing the characters from the original The Amazing World of Gumball series in the new series, like Gumball’s whole class which I’m happy that didn’t change. But overall, I didn’t enjoy the series The Wonderful Weird World of Gumball. I would rate this a 5.5/10

I 100% agree with this. What made the Amazing World of Gumball so great was the hilariously dumb nature of it. Anything could happen in the Amazing World of Gumball, and so there was cool plots for each episode. For example, in one episode, Gumball and Darwin fight against the universe to sit on the couch all day. It was so creative, so relatable, and so funny. The Wonderful Weird World of Gumball on the other hand is less focused on giving the audience laughs, and an appreciation of creativity, but instead focuses way more on being wholesome and teaching a lesson. This is fine, but this show’s main goal and what gave its appeal so much beforehand was being funny, with teaching a lesson being something served on the side. Also, I think that the lessons are not necessarily universal, but may be partisan. For example, it has lessons on how AI is dangerous, or that coorporations are greedy and bad. To be fair, The Wonderfully Weird World Of Gumball did still make me laugh and chuckle sometimes, but it is far from the masterpiece of The Amazing World of Gumball.

the original series had plenty of plots relating to real world issues (for example, season 6 episode 38 “The Web”), so i don’t agree with the assessment that having political/real world messages is a departure from the spirit of the original

(SPOILERS AHEAD of season 6 episode 38 of Gumball)
I’d like to respectfully disagree with this. I just watched the original gumball episode, “The Web” and as expected, it was gas. It did not talk about any cared about real world issues however. It mainly focused on how older people suck at using computers. My question is how is old people sucking at using technology an important issue in today’s world? This isn’t a debated issue or anything. The only people hurt by this are a couple of older folks who think they’re tech savy or something. While I think this episode specifically in original Gumball doesn’t focus on relevent issues, I agree that there might be some episodes more focused on that. In those episodes though, the original Gumball handles it well, giving both arguments and sides of the story, something which the new Gumball doesn’t do.
