The GBHS Library is a place known by all, but under-appreciated by many.
The GBHS Library is led by both Rhonda Cobian, the Library Technician, and Megan Blue, the RJUHSD District Librarian. While the library is known for just reading and studying, students may not know that it offers more than just that. They offer puzzles, computers, and occasionally movies to watch on a big screen.
Blue has been working between Granite Bay, Woodcreek, and Oakmont high schools for two decades.
“Traveling is not difficult. The difficulty is not being able to work directly with students and campus staff. I miss creating those relationships.” Blue said.
Students are more likely to find Cobian at the GBHS library front desk often as she is there almost every day as library tech. Cobian helps in making sure that the library works smoothly, and makes sure the library maintains healthy relationships with students.
“Having clear processes and procedures and good communication with the students and staff make things run a lot smoother.” Cobian said.
Although many people are aware about the library, many people associate them with books. However, there is a multitude of under-utilized resources that students can take advantage of.
“If you are looking for a place to just breathe, relax and decompress – come to the library. It isn’t just the books, we have puzzles, Legos and coloring supplies if you just need a break!” Blue said.
Teachers, (particularly English teachers) use the library as a resource to aid students with learning.
“ I bring my AP Lit and AP Lang students down there, and we check out books of their choice, and they do independent reading projects. … So we always have a book on our hands.” Shannon McCann, AP Lit, Ap Lang, and English 9 teacher at Granite Bay High School, said.
Students who use the library also enjoy the many utilities that the library has to offer.
“One thing I like about the library is that it can be utilized in different ways, such as being a study hall, looking for a new book, hanging out with friends or just looking to relax in a stress-free environment.” Philip Saephanh, a Junior at Granite Bay High School, said.
The library is a place for students, teachers, and clubs to use as a resource which will better help students with learning.
“My ultimate goal for the library is that it is a place for everyone. I want to have the books and/or resources available for all staff and students. Libraries are changing and are not just about books anymore.” Blue said.

Libraries were my safe space when I was younger so I could really relate to this article. I appreciate the fact that the GBHS library team are making sure it remains to be a safe space for everyone but also relevant to the ever changing times. Offering sources of information and learning not limited to books and reading. I think the writers captured that really well. Kudos to Amari and Murtaza! I hope this article brings more students and staff to libraries, not just in GBHS but in their own communities.
