The screams from people surrounding the stage began to be heard from yards away as the screens lit up the amphitheater and Conan Gray rode his bike onto the stage. The Wishbone Pajama Show was about to begin.
The concert opened with a popular song on the Wishbone album: “My World.” Gray then hopped off of his bike and onto the stage, ready to make an impact on the crowd before him. The setlist had a wide variety of songs from Gray’s studio albums, but the main focus was on his most recent album, Wishbone.
Even from where I was sitting on the lawn, the level of performance Gray gave was amazing to witness. Not only was his voice and sound amazing, everything else was too. The tracks he used as he jumped and walked around the stage sets on stage was fitting as well. The primary set piece contained a bed which was located in the middle of the stage. Gray used this as a way to transition through the setlist as well as using it as an interactive prop during a few songs, such as during “Connell.”
Gray’s voice was awesome to hear live and it was completely different from the studio albums that this tour represented. The albums’ sound slightly more mechanical and there is not as much attitude put into them whereas the concert had a lot of emotion and gave a glimpse of Gray’s raw talents. As the show continued, each of the songs got more of his personality poured into them and each note he sang was strong and well supported by his vocal chords.
The concerts’ attire was that of a pajama party due to the theme of the tour referencing the album’s vulnerability, and many people around me had really cool outfits that they had planned out for this event. Some people had t-shirts with references to the album, while some people went full out and used niche references to things Gray had said in the past to formulate their outfits. Some people just wore their every-day pajamas.
Early on in the concert, Gray announced; “this one is for all my delusional girls out there” and everyone in the audience put a blue or yellow sticky note over their flash depending on which section they were in, creating a beautiful visual of yellow and blue lights as Gray sang. It was a nice way for the audience to show Gray that we appreciated the experience he was giving us.
Gray interacted with the audience a lot. This was seen with the way he chose the surprise song. The screen displayed two options that are not on the setlist and a member of the audience got to break a paper wishbone with Gray. Since the audience member got the long end, they got to pick from the two options on the screen.
This experience was sensational to witness and left me starstruck for the rest of the weekend, as everything was above the standard for a concert. I would rate this a 10/10 and I would definitely go to it again.
